Project course - shave horse
The shave horse is essentially a piece of furniture that also functions as a vice - by sitting on the shave horse, both of your hands remain free to maneuver the tool you’re using, whether that’s a spoke shave, a draw knife, or nearly any other tool you could think of. There are many shave horse designs that I could have chosen for this course, but instead we will be building a custom shave horse as designed by Bruce Kunkel, exclusively for the Mr. Sawdust School. This unique design is only four feet in length, so you can use it the traditional way — outdoors — or in your shop without having a footprint that will dominate your space. I personally will be using my shave horse in the outdoors, by my firepit, making for very relaxing evenings working by the fire; you can use your shave horse however you see fit.
All the wear parts of the shave horse are made of white oak, which make them nearly rot-proof and resistant to degradation, while the rest of the chassis of the shave horse is made out of white pine to reduce weight for ease of movement. The shave horse can be adjusted to accommodate different thicknesses of wood, adding extra flexibility and usability to the tool.
This project course will be run on Thursdays, starting October 6th, from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM. The course is anticipated to last 8 weeks, but due to the complexity of the project, it could run for additional sessions, as needed.
The cost of this course is $1,150 and includes instruction, wood, hardware, and a copy of the plans.
